Rivers State Assembly Issues Renewed Impeachment Warning Against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a stern warning to Governor Sim Fubara, indicating a potential impeachment should it be deemed necessary to safeguard constitutional integrity.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule made this declaration during a press briefing held in Port Harcourt, the state's capital, where he was joined by 26 fellow legislators.

"This assembly will not hesitate to impeach Fubara, if it becomes the last resort to uphold the Constitution," Speaker Amaewhule emphasized.

This development arises amidst escalating tensions between the governor and 27 lawmakers aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. The latter group criticized Dr. Abiye Sekibo, leading the former Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, for recent verbal assaults on Wike.

Notably, in 2023, the Assembly had previously threatened impeachment due to clashes between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike. However, in December of the same year, 26 legislators rescinded the impeachment notice during a session, citing respect for President Bola Tinubu, who mediated a reconciliation meeting between the conflicting parties.

According to reports from DAILY POST, President Tinubu successfully brokered a peace agreement between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, contributing to the withdrawal of the impeachment notice.
